Today’s ornament, The Nutcracker, is very near and dear to my heart. I can’t even remember the first time I saw The Nutcracker as a child, but somehow it has become a tradition—from going to see the ballet (or watching it on TV) most years to Nutcrackers being the main holiday decoration in our home. I usually buy at least one to add to my collection each year, and now have many in all shapes, sizes, and colors; some with drums or staffs or capes and others just simple and elegant (and handsome) on their own.

The ornaments in this series are fashioned after my first Nutracker, traditional and simple, strong and yet kind, featuring a single Nutcracker standing on a snow-covered ground amidst falling snow. Each Nutcracker is unique — with his own uniform and quirky facial expression — on one of three main colored backgrounds (Blue, Green, or Gingerbread). And, as with all others, each ornament is full of texture from the collaged Christmas carol music and the whimsical marks of the underpainting can be seen peeking through the background.
